On the defensive front, artificial intelligence has elevated the Zero Trust model (an approach in which every access attempt requires continuous verification) to unprecedented predictive levels. Systems inspect traffic in real time, neutralizing anomalies before infrastructure is compromised and transforming protection, once primarily reactive, into a dynamic and anticipatory mechanism.
However, the same technology that strengthens systems is also being used to subvert them, fueling a digital arms race. Human operators orchestrate attacks enhanced by generative models (systems capable of creating new text, media, or code) to circumvent algorithmic defenses. Incidents recorded between 2025 and 2026 illustrate this escalation: sophisticated deepfake fraud schemes (highly realistic audio and video fabrications) cloned the voices of financial executives, persuading subordinates to carry out illicit transfers worth millions of dollars.
At the same time, during intrusions in early 2026, attackers used AI-powered coding assistants to conduct relentless automated scans, bypassing traditional protections and extracting large volumes of sensitive data.
Beyond this human-mediated confrontation, a third element is taking shape: full algorithmic autonomy. We are witnessing the rise of independent AI agents capable of selecting targets for defense or attack within fractions of a second. Recent cases have revealed AI-based malicious code that, when confronted with security barriers, analyzes the failure, rewrites its own logical structure, and immediately launches another intrusion attempt.
The analysis of this frontier does not lie in moral judgments about benign or malicious logic, but in the rigorous alignment of objective functions (the mathematical goals programmed to guide a machine’s decisions). When autonomous entities operate to exploit or neutralize vulnerabilities, the central challenge becomes the technical governance of AI agents whose processing speed has already surpassed the human capacity to react.
As we approach the horizon forecast by major leaders in the technology industry—the advent of Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)—cybersecurity is moving toward an epistemological singularity. If these projections materialize and we delegate both defense and attack to entities whose cognitive capabilities surpass human intelligence to an unfathomable degree, information security will cease to be merely a technical discipline and become a fundamentally philosophical and existential dilemma.
In a digital ecosystem governed by intelligences operating across logical dimensions that our species may be incapable of auditing, the final question will no longer be how we protect our servers, but what role will remain for us in a network from which control has been irrevocably taken away.0
